The heart of rock & roll has always encompassed both raucous abandonment and quiet reflection. Jimmy LaFave knows that better than most, as the songs on Texoma so vividly proclaim. In a time when artists of lessor dedication fill the airwaves with songs that say nothing, LaFave inspires us with songs and a voice that awaken our dying spirit and calm us when life seems too hard.

His first studio album in almost four years, Texoma follows the success of his "bootleg" double-CD Trail. The 16 songs on Texoma cover all the traditional LaFave territory ranging from gotta dance rockers like "Poor Man's Dream" and "On the Road to Rock 'n' Roll," to heart-melting ballads like "Never is a Moment" and "Woody Guthrie." And with songs like "Glorious Day" and "Love Can Find Its Own Way" someone is bound to refer to Texoma as LaFave's "happy album."

LaFave continues building a reputation for performing surprising covers, and includes here a stunning take on John Phillips' "San Francisco," plus a breathtaking version of Jimmy Webb's notoriously hard-to-get-right "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress." Also noteworthy is his cover of Gretchen Peters' "On a Bus to St. Cloud," long a concert favorite. And of course any LaFave record would be incomplete without a Dylan tune; this time out it's a truly transcendent "Emotionally Yours."

Texoma finds LaFave reunited with Larry Wilson on guitars and David Webb on keyboards, both key contributors to his classic Austin Skyline album. The Burns Sisters also provide backing vocals. With Texoma, LaFave once again shows why he is both the quintessential American rocker and premiere ballad singer of his day.
