Randy Glines Bass / Harmonica
Far and away the longest standing member of the troupe, Randy laid down the pulse of Night Tribe's sound since several years before Austin Skyline was recorded in mid-'92, and as one can see from this pic,
that pulse gets Randy pretty excited.
Known for keeping the band howling on the road with renditions of his beloved phone prank & other assorted "bus tapes," Randy was always an emotional, as well as musical anchor for the band.
Randy is in demand around Austin for lessons, ranging from music theory to his specialties of bass and harmonica. Be jealous if you must, but when the band was staying with us in Denver, we once heard Randy do "a little vocalizin" on "Get Rhythm," ("Johnny Cash style" he told us) with Lafave accompanying him on guitar (including 12-bar solo).
Glines is from Wisconsin and lives in Austin with his wife Annette. (Who, by the way, transcribed the lyrics to all of Austin Skyline, so they could be included in the notes. Our thanks to both of you.)
Rick Poss / Guitars
Rick joined Night Tribe just shortly prior to the looming start date (Jan. '95) for the "Buffalo" sessions. And, from his little corner at Cedar Creek, earned his keep in spades. Just listen to his solo on "Sweetheart Like You," or hang on as he threatens to careen out of control on "Last Train."
Rick first played with Jimmy during the Austin Acoustic Music Festival in late '94. The try-outs continued as other outstanding six-string sluggers stepped up to the plate, but it was Rick who made the team.
Rick and his wife, Marianne, live in Austin.
Stewart Cochran Piano, Organ & Accordian
Stewart also joined the band just before the buffalo returned, and it was wonderful to have him on board. His work on Hammond and piano hauled us from little dives to Big Pink, from first kiss memories to last dance dreams. On stage, every time he took a big solo you could feel a change in the crowd. When Night Tribe fans waited each night for "Carol," "Whole Lotta Shakin'," or any of those show-stopping rave-ups, they were waiting for a lot of things, but you can bet one of them was to see what came jumping off those keys......
Eric Hansen Drums
Eric was the Road Novel era's youngest member, and hails from Jimmy's old stomping grounds in Stillwater, OK. He was drafted from the popular touring Stillwater band Medicine Show, and you could always tell that Lafave's really happy with the way the kid pushee that air at his back.
In the words of his road roommate, Stewart: "Eric is an enigma wrapped in a paradox living in an AirStream."
Larry Wilson Guitars '90-94
The guitar hero of Austin Skyline and Highway Trance is currently in Austin fronting The Spaceheaters, featuring Larry on vocals and lead guitar, and performing a lineup heavy on fine Wilson-penned tunes.
Their first record hit the shelves in February '97, and should still be available from Waterloo Records.
And now, a word from our sponsor...
This section would be incomplete without recognizing Jimmy's favorite (only?) co-writer,
the godfather of the Stillwater songwriter scene, Bob Childers.
From Garth to Jimmy, he's taken them all into his tutelege
and then sent them into the world.
Now Bob has his own albums, on Binky Records out of Baton Rouge, and they're all gems.
Our favorite is "Nothing More Natural"
Here he is in a pic from the CD package,
proud, happy and wise
in his Buffalo Return To The Plains T-shirt....
