OK so I bit the bullet and joined. I'm a Canadian, living North of
Toronto. Found Jimmy's music when I lived in Dallas and Austin Skyline came out. I thouroughly enjoy Trails. I like to say that Jimmy does Dylan
better than Dylan does Dylan.

There's alot more Austin left in me than I will admit.

Thanks so much for your help on this. I will send out a bunch of info to the e-mail news list this afternoon.

Back to you soon on our time in Santa Fe. Hadn't nocticed you were in Las Cruces (which I visited many times back in the 70's). You've got as long a drive to Santa Fe as we do from Denver.

All the best,

ms

Subject: Jimmy's Guitarist

Jimmy has had several guitar players over the years. Currently Terry "Buffalo" Ware is with him and has been with LaFave for about 2 years. Other players with Jimmy LaFave in the past have been Rick Poss and Larry Wilson. LaFave has always had monster guitar players..but the person you are thinking about is Terry Ware....who is from Oklahoma.

OK Mark, I'm in. You and I have communicated before. I'm in St. Louis and will see Jimmy on the 30th at Off Broadway. I play in a little coffee house trio and we do a couple of Jimmy's songs at Border's, etc.

HI EVERYBODY.
MY WIFE AND I HEARD JIMMY DOING A LIVE ACOUSTIC VERSION OF "INTO YOUR LIFE" ON OUR BELOVED, NOW DEFUNCT CHICAGO RADIO STATION 92.7 WCBR (THE ONLY CHICAGO RADIO STATION EVER WORTH A DAMN!) . WE WENT OUT AND BOUGHT "ROAD NOVEL" AND WERE BLOWN AWAY. NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE NOW OWN ALL HIS CD'S AND CATCH MOST HIS AREA SHOWS. WE SHOULD SEE HIM AT FITZGERALDS ON OCT.1.......WHAT'S HIS LEAD GUITAR PLAYER'S NAME....I HEARD A D.J. ONCE REFER TO HIM AS "BUFFALO". I'LL ALSO AGREE THAT JIMMY DOES DYLAN BETTER THAN DYLAN.......

ANYONE CATCH THAT BONUS TRACK ON "TRAIL" CALLED "ROSIE"?

I don't know which guitar player you mean but Poss is a MONSTER.

From: "Gary Bouchard"

In the past year I've been able to track down all of Jimmy's CD releases;
however, I'd like to hear his earlier recordings....

If anyone comes across used copies of "Broken Line" (1981 vinyl) or "Highway Angels... Full Moon Rain" (1989 cassette), please negotiate with me....
(I'd have an easier time finding a dime in my cat's litter box than finding
any Jimmy Lafave recordings here in Not-Quite-Dogsled Country, Canada....)

In the meantime, I'd be pleased to hear some thumbnail descriptions of these earlier Lafave efforts....

Regards,

Gary Bouchard

This is great, to have this forum for all of us LaFave fans. I went to see Jimmy last weekend in Dallas with Kevin Welchand I was surprised to see David Webb, Jimmy's original Night Tribe piano player, on stage. What a lovely surprise!!! And he sounded as wonderful as I remembered.Hey, Mark, when is Jimmy planning on getting hooked up with an email address? Also, I'll be in Austin this weekend. Is he in town?Abby Goldstein

(Abby by the way is a friend of Jimmy's and music industry sort in Dallas; also she's the voice in the radio studio on "Burden To Bear" from Trail.)

Looks like Jimmy's next stop is St. Louis, and he's taking this weekend off.You should give him a call though. As for the e-mail address, it seems he's closer than ever. Still loves his typewriter, and says the main reason he avoids the computer thing is that, being a hunt and peck typist, he's concerned about keeping up with the mail.

Great to hear from you,

Mark Shumate

ps to the group - Abby works in radio in Dallas and has done a lot to help Jimmy over the years. She is also the dj voice at the end of "Burden To Bear" on Trail

hi abby:
i was having lunch w/ Jimmy in CT. a few months ago, and we got to talking about his band and former band members. although i love all of his albums, austin skyline is by far my favorite. in fact, it ranks in my top 10 albums of all time ... and that's saying a lot. what i did mention to Jimmy, (it was more like an emphatic declaration) was that David Webb was an integral part of that austin skyline sound. there are great players all over this world, but David Webb truly paints quite a vivid and melodic landscape when asked to "fill in the gaps" in Jimmy's music. a lovely player. 'nuff said.

Mike, :)

Not sure that I could isolate 6 songs but my all time favourite is still
the first song I ever heard Jimmy sing. I had just moved to Dallas and
discovered KNON and KERA. I was hearing guys like Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and Rusty Weir for the very first time. I was in a taping frenzy when a haunting version of Dylan's "Shelter From The Storm" broke through the airwaves and hooked me for good.
Wow! What a "coincidence"...that's the first one I heard, played on KUT FM in Austin, TX....I was listening out in the country and called in to find out who it was... I remember wondering "*WHO* is that VOICE...that VOICE..."...

Re Jimmy's various guitarists...my favorite is without question, Larry
Wilson... he'd left Night Tribe shortly before I discovered JImmy so I've never heard them play together...Larry then had his own band "The Spaceheaters" here in Austin for a while... then he kinda retired...and I almost cried when I found out I'd missed a few shows this summer where he played with Jimmy again... <sniff> WAH................

G'day from downunder,
Thought I'd join in the debate - Austin Skyline is one of my "desert island
discs", along with Blood On The Tracks so I suppose you all know where i'm coming from !! "Measuring Words" is a particular fave along with Carla's "Big Girl". I bet Mr Zimmerperson wishes he could sing Bob Dylan like Jimmy. As a DJ on one of Australia's only alt/real country radio shows "The Cosmic Cowboy Cafe" on 2RRR 88.5 FM in Sydney, Australia (Olympic City 2000 !) I have done my best in introducing Jimmy's work to Aussie audiences and look forward to the day when plays here. I've just seen Dale Watson two nights in a row and am seriously hanging out to see Jimmy and Chris Wall "downunder". Hell - they'll make no money, but get to visit the greatest place on earth outside Texas with the friendliest people.

IS JIMMY GOING TO BE APPEARING ON AND MUSIC SHOWS IN THE NEAR
FUTURE?....IE..SESSIONS AT 54TH OR AUSTIN CITY LIMITS?

MIKE

I failed to answer Mike at the time, but so far there is nothing on the schedule, although the Folk Alliance main stage appearance and Mountain Stage in February are significant in their own ways.
